Dr Declan Hill
Our guest on the Controlling Idea on Monday March 6th, 2023 is Dr Declan Hill, when we will be discussing The Godfather novel by Mario Puzo and the film directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
Dr Declan Hill, associate professor at University of New Haven, specialises in the study of organized crime and corruption. As an investigative journalist, he broke stories on the Canadian mafia, the close connections between NHL stars and the Russian Mafiya, among others.
His first book, The Fix: Organized Crime and Soccer (2010), about Asian match-fixers of World Cup was a best-seller, translated into twenty-one languages, optioned in Hollywood and helped to catalyze 34 police investigations.
He has won numerous awards for his work, including Amnesty International’s Best Human Rights Documentary, Play the Game (Denmark) and the Canadian Association of Journalists.
His most recent book is The Insider's Guide to Matchmaking in Football (2013), dubbed as "Freakonomics meets sport corruption".
Dr Declan Hill has also published a number of academic articles, was a reviewer for Global Integrity and has probed the impact of the Russian mafia on professional ice hockey in the NHL.
In 2011, he pioneered the first online anti-match-fixing education course for Sport Accord that was eventually used by Interpol – the International Police Force.
